How to Start Playing Pickleball in Charlotte

New to pickleball, new to Charlotte, or both? Either way, you've landed in the right place. Rally is where thousands of Charlotte locals have picked up a paddle for the first time and found themselves completely hooked. Here's exactly how to get started.

Step 1: Try It First

Before you commit to anything, just try it. Taste of Pickleball is Rally's beginner-only intro session designed to get you on the court without any pressure. No rules, no drills, just fun games, a few small tips along the way, and a drink included. It runs every other Saturday at 10 AM for just $5, and it's the lowest stakes way to find out if pickleball is for you. Spoiler: it usually is.

Step 2: Get Some Court Time

Once you've caught the bug, the best way to improve is simply to play more. Rally's Courts & Coffee sessions run Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings and are a great way to get on the court in a low-pressure setting before your day starts. Show up, play, grab a complimentary drip or cold brew, and go about your morning feeling like you've already accomplished something.

Step 3: Find Your People

Pickleball is more fun with other people — that's kind of the whole point. Rally Social runs three times a week and is one of the best ways to meet other players at your level, get an hour of play in, and enjoy an included drink while you're at it. The rotational format means you'll naturally mix and mingle throughout the session, so by the time it's over, you've already made a few new friends.

If you're just getting started and want something a little more structured, Rookies Social is designed specifically for newer players. Same format, same good vibes, just with a crowd that's also finding their footing on the court.

Step 4: Level Up with Instruction

Ready to actually get good? Rally's instructional series is where beginners become players. Rally Rookies is a four-week series that covers the basics, including shots, scoring, tactics, and technique, and ends with a mini tournament to put it all into practice. Once you've completed Rally Rookies, Rally Rookies 2.0 takes it further with deeper instruction on shot control, consistency, and sustaining longer rallies.

Step 5: Join a League

This is where Rally really shines. With seven weeks of consistent court time, friendly competition, and a community that shows up every week, leagues are the heartbeat of Rally. Whether you're a total beginner looking for your first competitive experience or an intermediate player ready to chase a championship, there's a league for you.

Rookies League is the perfect starting point for newer players. Leisure League is great for social players who want a mix of competition and fun. And if you're ready to get serious, Rally Ranks and Rally Ranks+ will keep you challenged.

Not sure which league is right for you? Sign up as a free agent, and Rally will pair you with a partner and place you in the right level.

Step 6: Make It a Lifestyle

The best thing about Rally is that it's not just a place to play pickleball. It's a café, a bar, a social club, and a community all in one. Once you find your rhythm on the court, stick around after for a smoothie, a cocktail, or a seat at the outdoor bar. That's where the real magic happens.
