Learning Latte art with vic

We take our coffee seriously at Rally- so much so that we partnered with local Charlotte roastery Night Swim Coffee to curate the perfect coffee bar. For those looking to progress their milk art skills or simply impress others with a fun party trick, follow along as Victoria Williams, Rally’s Café Manager, teaches you how to master the art of the Latte Art Tulip.

Step 1: Angle the Steam Wand

Begin by positioning the steam wand at a slight angle within the milk pitcher. This will allow the steam to evenly distribute throughout the milk, creating a smooth and velvety texture.

Step 2: Aerate the Milk

As you start steaming, keep an ear out for that "paper tearing" sound- this is your signal that the milk and air are hitting it off.  A little aeration goes a long way- don't go overboard and end up with a frothy mess.

Step 3: Create a Whirlpool

Observe the milk as it naturally forms a whirlpool inside the pitcher. This indicates that the milk is achieving the perfect consistency, with the microfoam and liquid milk blending in perfect harmony.

Step 4: Check the Temperature

Feel the side of the milk pitcher to ensure the temperature is just right – it should feel warm in a good way- like the feeling of being on the beach in summer, right before you move to the shade.

Step 5: Incorporate Foam and Milk

Once the steaming is complete, gently tap the pitcher on the counter A little swirl is all it takes to marry the foam and milk into a dreamy latte canvas.

Step 6: Pour the Milk

Now, here comes the artistic part. Tilt your coffee mug slightly for a smooth pour and better control over the latte art. Trust- it makes all the difference. Then, start pouring the milk into the mug in a circular motion, starting from the center and gradually working your way out.

Step 8: "Drop the Leaf"

Once the milk touches the edge, it’s time to draw the art! Move the milk pitcher towards the mug's edge and gently "drop the leaf” towards the other side of the mug, pulling up once you have one layer. Repeat until the perfect layered semicircle shape is made.

Step 9: Draw the Tulip

Almost there! Now, bring the pitcher up until you have a thin stream of milk pouring into the last leaf, then draw a thin line right through the middle of those lovely leaves.

Step 10: Show it Off!

Give your latte a taste test- if a milk mustache forms, you know you’ve nailed it.
